In the soaring world of Aether Skies, not all that floats is crafted by hands. Far above the surface, among the drifting cities, storm channels, and eldritch storms, glide the sky whales—enormous, ancient leviathans that are equal parts wonder, terror, and mystery.

They are the sky’s wild heartbeat.
They shape the world not by choice, but by their very existence.

This post explores what sky whales are, how they shape the Aether Skies setting, and how GMs and players can use them in TTRPG adventures.


🐋 What Are Sky Whales?

Sky whales are massive, semi-magical creatures that drift through the upper aether currents. Some scholars believe they are natural—an evolution of magic-infused megafauna. Others claim they are relics of a pre-cataclysmic age, shaped by old gods or forgotten titans. Whatever their origin, they defy easy understanding.

Some glow with Aetherlight under their translucent hides. Others drift like stone leviathans, islands in themselves, with plant life clinging to their backs. A few have been seen only once in living memory, disappearing beyond the edges of the known sky.


🌍 How Sky Whales Shape the World

  • Sky whales are objects of worship, folklore, and superstition. Some believe they carry the souls of the dead or ferry dreams between cities.

  • Major sky cities have festivals marking whale migrations or appearances.

  • Superstitious captains refuse to sail under certain types or colors of whales, believing it draws storms or madness.

💰 Economic Influence

  • Whalebone fragments, shed from old giants, are rare and highly valuable—a material stronger than steel and able to channel Aether more efficiently.

  • “Whale chasers” are elite (and often outlawed) crews who attempt to harvest shed materials—or worse, hunt weakened whales.

  • Entire economies shift when a whale dies near a city; its remains are like a drifting goldmine of meat, bone, and arcane tissue.

Give a specific sky whale personality, history, and influence.

Let players interact with them through rituals, dream-sequences, or eldritch resonance.

Sky whales themselves aren’t inherently hostile—but they are massive, unknowable forces.

  • Where whales gather, Aether Parasites, scavenger flocks, or opportunistic raiders follow.

For high-level campaigns, eldritch whales—beasts corrupted by the Curtain—can become direct, horrifying threats.
